Made To Order/FAQ

Made to order - what does that mean and why is it important?

Our made to order business model is a more sustainable and personalized method of shopping rather than the typical stocked inventory that is used by the majority of brands in the fashion industry today. We are taking a slower approach to fashion by only creating what is ordered, and being meticulous about the quality of fabrics and materials we use. We hope that if you take good care of your pieces, you’ll truly have them hanging in your closet forever (or at least a really long time!). While the fashion industry is one of the most beautiful and creative, it is also one of the most wasteful and polluting: for reference, the fashion industry produces 10% of all humanity's carbon emissions. Clothes release half a million tonnes of microfibres into the ocean every year, which is equivalent to more than 50 billion plastic bottles. Microfibres are essentially impossible to clean up and can enter food chains. Roughly 500 billion dollars are lost each year due to clothing that’s barely worn and rarely recycled - with fast fashion brands being responsible for a huge part of this due to their million quantities of each style produced, as well as their marketing strategies of encouraging their customers to continuously buy the next trendy item. Trends eventually go out of style, thus leaving a sickening amount of unwanted excess clothing left over. Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. This fast fashion model has a high turn over rate for what's cute in the moment, but a devastating long term effect on the environment.

Our mission is do right by the environment and encourage customers to forgo the way we have become accustomed to buying clothes. By investing in garments made from high quality fabrics that are made with love and delicate care, we can reduce our environmental impact, feel good in our clothes, and revel in knowing that what you're wearing is special; it won't be on thousands of others.

Where is my order made?

A small team of seamstresses in Los Angeles, CA make your garment.

How long will my order take to be made and delivered to me?

4-6 weeks. Due to Covid-19, there may be additional delays as fabric suppliers and mills are experiencing shortages and their own setbacks. We will contact you if there are any issues.

Can I customize my order?

YES! Our business grew out of a longing for size inclusivity in the industry as well as frustration that clothes always seem to be cut too damn short or small. Please, please email info@virginiafontaine.com if you don't see your size listed. We are working to offer a full size range for all bodies.
